Boxing Day - Richard Wilner
Forty-eight-year-old John Seip, like many of his Wall Street colleagues, played a lot of sports in high school and college - basketball and baseball at St. Peter's on Staten Island before taking up boxing while at North Adams State College in Massachusetts.
Sports, though, were put on the back burner after starting working on Wall Street in 1982. Ten years later he formed John Seip & Company, which clears trades for institutional clients.
Sure, he worked out and sparred a little at the Trinity Boxing Gym, a favorite of Wall Street types, but always thought his sports-dominated days were behind him.
Then, three years ago, itching for something to do, he cut back on his hours and decided to pick up a few fighters and manage their careers.
Today, his Brighton Productions, named after the New Brighton nabe he grew up in, manages 23-year-old Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin, a promising middleweight sporting an 8-0 record with seven KOs.
"He's a very charismatic individual, and an excellent fighter," who many compare to a young Thomas Hearns, Seip told The Post last week, speaking of Quillin.
Quillin, named after the Cuban lightweight boxer of the 1930s (Quillin's dad grew up in the same town and the original Kid Chocolate), had a brief amateur career and will be eased into the pro circuit. He steps into the ring next on Feb. 22 at the Roseland Ballroom.
"There'll be a lot of my Wall Street crowd there," Seip notes, adding that if things continue going well in the squared circle, he could easily see himself walking away from Wall Street.
"I'm already devoting 100 percent of my time to boxing," he said. |
